Ten short stories set in Naples’ suburbs. Each of them refers to a commandment, but there isn’t any religious reference and no judgment occurs. Most of the main characters are teenagers, who live lonely lives. In first person, using a direct and realistic language, they tell the events they are involved in, without any form of pietism.
“Ten” has been defined “a cross-section of real life, more realistic than a journalistic investigation.”
Even though it was written 17 years ago, the book makes the reader breathe the atmosphere that is nowadays in some areas in Naples. This means that the changings occurred in Naples have not come to its suburbs yet and, furthermore, it means that Longo’s stories are universal. Because of this, they are out of time, they are definitely immune to time.
